(December 2, 2024) – The Municipality of Malapatan stood proud and victorious as it claimed the crown at the highly anticipated Pearl of Sarangani 2024 pageant, one of the grand highlights of this year’s Munato Festival. During the Flag Raising Ceremony, Mayor Jun Sumbo Jr. reflected on this monumental achievement, sharing heartfelt insights and personal experiences from the coronation night.

Malapatan’s triumph was driven by two exceptional candidates: Ms. Evangelica Gafa and Ms. Arkianna Kyrzelle Lubaton, both former winners of the Mutya ng Malapatan 2024. Embarking on their journey to the crown, the two endured immense challenges but remained steadfast and determined, buoyed by the unwavering support of the Malapateño community. The coronation night unfolded with a vibrant energy that filled the venue, as constituents and attendees from across Sarangani gathered in celebration. The atmosphere was electric, a mix of hope and excitement rippling through the crowd.

Mayor Jun Sumbo Jr., a proud supporter of Malapatan’s candidates, candidly shared his emotions during the event. “I was so nervous that night; all the candidates were stunning and gorgeous, but nothing could compare to our own contestants,” he recalled. Despite fleeting doubts, the mayor remained hopeful. “During the announcement of the Top 6, I felt refreshed and delighted as both of our contestants were called.”

The tension heightened as the competition narrowed down to the Top 3. Ms. Evangelica Gafa stood strong among the final candidates, a moment that brought shivers to the mayor. “When the finalists were called, my hopes soared. I was biased, of course, but seeing Ms. Gafa make it to the Top 3 was beyond thrilling.”

Initially, Ms. Gafa was announced as the 2nd runner-up, a moment Mayor Sumbo described as bittersweet yet pride-filled. “I was so proud of her. I went up the stage to congratulate her and take photos. It was a victory in itself for us.”

But an unexpected twist changed the course of the evening. The host, visibly apologetic, announced a technical error in the rankings. As the corrected results were revealed, it was confirmed: Ms. Evangelica Gafa was the Pearl of Sarangani 2024.

“I was speechless,” Mayor Sumbo recounted, his voice filled with emotion. “Eagerness, joy, and excitement flooded through me. When the host finally declared Ms. Gafa as the winner, I couldn’t help but jump and shout in celebration. We did it—Malapatan brought home the crown!”

The victory marked a historic moment for Malapatan, breaking a long drought in claiming the prestigious title. Mayor Sumbo expressed his overwhelming pride, attributing the success to the collective spirit and resilience of the Malapateño community. “It’s been a long time since we’ve brought home this crown.
