It is with the great pride and honor in behalf of Barangay Kihan to express our great deepest gratitude to the Provincial Government and Local Government Unit of Malapatan in spearheading this timely and rare kind of program where participants from different sectors of our community were encouraged to promptly and actively participate in order to achieve and realize the common aspirations of having a sustainable development and peace in the community.

We cannot simply deny the facts, that Honorable Mayor ALFONSO M. SINGCOY Sr and the members of the Local Legislative Body joined hands in trying to solve the existing core causes of the different needs and problems of the locality.

The creation of the Municipal Barangay Development Planning Team Group under the supervision and guidance of the Municipal Planning and Development Coordinator , to do the task, is a clear indication of sincere and heartful support to transform and uplift he living condition of the constituents

HISTORY

In a past few decades, the community of Barangay Kihan is a peaceful place in mountainous area of Malapatan. The environment situation of Kihan is considered untouched or virgin natural resources. There was a group of lumads who tried to catch fish in the river for their consumption found a look alike sharpening stone called “ KIHIHAN “, and later it became the word KIHAN.

In a succeeding decades, a certain old man named GUFALTO, father of DONWATA “ WATING “, who has eight ( 8 ) wives, and serve as chieftain of the the lumads because of his humanitarian leadership. Four of his eight wives were LILANG, BAYANG, TIYAY and MANGAFI. These were the ancestors of family clans of MENTAL, THIU, BAYANG, and here family BAGIT, LABI, COLANO, PALAWAN, TABLO and SALWAY were linked. The territorial jurisdiction of GUFALTO from Sitio Macol, Nabol up to Sitio Sulkili, Banla, Akbalo and Centro Kihan. In Sitio Banla, SAGU was the ancestor of family TIBANG, KAYAMBA and MANDALO. In Lower and Upper K'lobong, family BARO was the ancestors of family CLEGA where BITUGA LAMINGO was linked. In Centro Kihan and K'yogan, family KLANTIK was the ancestors of family SALWAY where family THIU, PALAWAN and BALAKAYO were linked. In Sitio Lambanwang, family SAGISE was the ancestors of family ADOY where family THIU, ANDRES and YAWAN were linked. In Sitio Proper and Makiangayon, FYANG ( grandfather of Tribal Chieftain Fulong Masulong Bagit ) was the ancestor of family ANYONG. In Sitio Amnas, KAFITAN ( family PENTUGO and SAKILAN were linked ) together with family SALUNTAY TIWADE, TANGO and BALKE were settled. In Sitio Lanao, KADED was the ancestor of family BARO where family COLANO, YAMBO, LAMINGO, BETUGA, GAFA and IGNACIO were settled. In Sitio K'lalang, DAYE was the ancestor of family DAYAG and SALWAY where family LAGALCAN and BASIO. In Sitio Banlas, family LAGALLO was the ancestor of family LUKINA, MANTE and BAYANG where family SUMBO, ANGOS and SUKAL were linked. In Sitio Limbunga, GALEZ was the ancestor of family YANO where family PANDITA, BAGIT ( grandfather of Jimmy T. Bagit ), SUGOT and TUKO. In Sitio Amlitos I & II, family TAGNA'EN and KABKA were the ancestors of family BAYANG and BAGO where family MAGAO, OPONG and DAWA were linked. In Sitio Malbato and K'yondog, families PANDITA and SEGAFU were settled. In Sitio Calonlama, family TABLO were settled. In Sitio Balsinang, family TAGUSE and LAWA, family SALWAY ( grandfather of Linte Salway ), SUCAL, LAMINGO, MIGUEL and SUMBO were settled. While in Sitio Amnas, family KAFITAN ( families PENTUGO and SAKILAN were linked ) were settled.

All families mentioned above were all lumads and exercising inter- marriage practices and of the same the ancestors of the new generation in Barangay Kihan.

The community composed of 90% lumads and the remaining 10% were mixed with different tribes like Cebuano, Kalagan, Ubό, Maguindanao and T'boli. Trade and commerce were the reason of the settlement of families TAN, QUERIT, BAGAN and AGUILA in Barangay Kihan.

Prior to its creation into a regular barangay, this is under the jurisdiction of Barangay Daan Suyan. This creation was made through the efforts of Tribal Chieftain FULONG LUMAYAS COLANO, Tribal Chieftain FULONG MASULONG BAGIT, with the support of PETRONILO TAN, MEDIO ESPAÑOL, AGAPITO MALINES, SR., NAIDAS OPONG, MARTAN COLANO, ROMULO PALAWAN, LIMBAS COLANO, SALIMAMA MENTAL, LEGANAO BAYANG, TIGALDAO BAYANG, MULAN LAGALCAN, Tribal Chieftain FULONG LEGANAO YAWAN, MANUEL AMORO, SALAN ZANO, KYOGA SUKINA, QUIAMA LAMINGO and MOLAYON ADOY. All of these aspirations were behind the strong support of Late Barangay Captains TALFUL SEGAFU and ANGELINA HILADO and Barangay Secretary ROGELIO “BEBOT” DECOLONGON of Daan Suyan. The Local Government of Malapatan through the able leadership of former Mayor PYANG L. SINGCOY heartily and dedicatedly give the full support to materialize the intentions and aspirations of the majority of the constituents of the community.

August 29, 1991, the memorable date of creation of Sitio Kihan into regular Barangay Unit of Municipality of Malapatan. In the eastern part is Municipality of Don Marcelino, Davao del Sur in the western part is Poblacion, Alabel, in the northern part is Pag- asa, Alabel and in the southern part is Upper uyan, Malapatan. At present, different programs and projects implemented in the barangay funded from the LGU of Malapatan, Province of Sarangani, UDP, KALAHI- CIDSS and other Non- Government Organizations .

Location and Total Land Area

Barangay Kihan is located in Northeastern part by Poblacion. The boundary of the barangay is in the eastern part by Municipality of Don Marcelino, Davao del Sur and in the northern part by Barangay Pag- Asa, Alabel and in the southern part by Upper Suyan of Malapatan. The barangay is 28 kilometers in distance from Poblacion. It has 26 sitios, the following are: Amnas, Makiangayon, Barangay Proper, Kayugan, Centro Kihan, Lower Klobong, Upper Klobong, Akbalo, Banla, Sulkili, Macol 1, Macol 2, Nabol, Banlas, Amlitos 1, Amlitos 2, Klalang, Limbonga, Clemon, Kalonlama, Balsinang, Katnog, Kyondog, Malbato and Lambanwang,

The barangay has only seven ( 7 ) land uses with total of 6620 hectares. These are forestland, brush land, plantation ( ipil- ipil ), agriculture, grassland, barren and wetland. Farm products can be located in agriculture land while in forestland the present use & situation of the mountainous portion of the barangay.

Barangay Kihan is geographically located between the boundaries of Municipality of Alabel and Malapatan in mountainous areas. Agriculture is the main source of livelihood of the community. Other land uses are for infrastructure and settlement. The community and members of the barangay council come to a certain different strategies to solve the bad road condition of the barangay for them to have an accessibility of the transportation of their farm products.

 

About Malapatan

Malapatan is a first class municipality in the province of Sarangani, Philippines. According to the 2010 census, it has a population of 72,386 people. As of 2010, it has a total voting population of 35,569 voters.

Malapatan is bounded on the west by Sarangani Bay, on the east by Davao del Sur, on the north by Alabel, and on the south by Glan.
